An excellent speech at a wedding will have a variety of elements. A best man speech can relate how the groom and best man know each other and what kind of relationship they have. This is effective if a portion of the audience at the wedding reception don’t know the best man. The best man can also tell an anecdote about the first time the groom met the bride, or asked her out etc.
A wedding mc might speak about his or her own marriage and discuss what it is like to be married. Another individual giving a wedding speech might talk about the challenges newlyweds face, and how the “new” couple will be best suited to face them because of their love for each other.
One element a great wedding speech will have, regardless of who is presenting it, is humor. A wedding reception audience is a crowd of people who are easy to please. They want to laugh. They have all attended weddings before and have listened to many similar speeches. They are ready to laugh at any attempt at humor, even a feeble one.
Inserting humor into a wedding speech is easier than most think. Many people who have the responsibility of giving a wedding speech think they must somehow turn a personal story about the bride or groom into a hilarious 3 minutes of comedy material.
That can be difficult even for professional comedians. There is a much simpler and more effective way. Use a tried and true wedding joke. One that is tasteful and funny.
Why would you tell a joke instead of a personal story? Well, tell a personal story, but don’t rely on it to get laughs. Use a proven, clean wedding joke to generate your laughs. Especially if you learn how to personalize the jokes and make them sure-fire additions to any speech.
