In starting my own home- based internet business, I get A LOT of raised eyebrows and dubious looks. You know the look I’m talking about, the one that says, “Are you crazy? I thought you were intelligent. You practice law. Don’t you know all those network businesses are all pyramids or scams?”

The answer to all of the above is a resounding: “NO!” I have done my due diligence. I want to share with you what I have learned.

Myth Buster #1: The educated response to “Network Marketing is a scam.”

The Facts: Network marketing began in the 1940′s when Nutralite Products, Inc. started its line of food supplements. Their marketing approach was later adopted by Amway with its household products. Since then, the industry has grown up and is actually uniquely situated for the next tidal wave which is coming to the distribution business. Annual sales in network marketing are approaching $ 20 billion annually in the U.S.

Myth Buster #2: The educated response to “All Network Marketing is just another pyramid scheme.”

The Facts: A Pyramid scheme does not involve the exchange of a product or valuable service. The upper level simply skims off the bottom fish. It is a structure that is ultimately doomed to financial failure and, by the way, is illegal. Presently there are at least 20 network marketing companies traded on NASDAQ and many others on the verge of going public. The recent extensions of government oversight is directed to promoting integrity in the industry and these opportunities would be or would have been foreclosed if they were illegal or utterly without value.

Myth Buster #3: The educated response to “New and existing opportunities in internet marketing use the ‘reverse funnel’ system which is just a new, high tech pyramid.”

The Facts: The “reverse funnel” is a program that is designed to establish ‘high converting’ marketing funnels on the Internet, based upon the premise that most people do not possess effective sales techniques and communication skills and would not otherwise be able to build their business. The program tries to eliminate human error from the marketing process.

Associating with a strong team of competent and highly successful professionals who have already crossed the frontier and developed the process makes this fundamentally a good idea. The reality is that if you work the program hard and persevere, the likelihood of success with this type of internet marketing program is quite high and very solid.

According to Paul Zane Pilzer in his recently published, The Next Millionaires the Internet demonstrates one of the most amazing economic revolutions ever and it is still in its infancy. Working for yourself to succeed in the climate of this economic tsunami makes more sense now than ever given the increasing job insecurity that is everyday news. According to Mr. Pilzer: “Entrepreneurs will be the biggest beneficiaries of this economic boom.” (see page 8).

Summary: This is not to say that all the snake oil sales folk have gone the way of the dinosaur. The point is that, in order to assess any particular business opportunity, you have to do your due diligence and get to the facts. Do not assume that just because a particular internet business is MLM, a systems approach or involves a network community, that it is not a viable business opportunity. The one thing that automatically raises red flags for me is when the offer promises automatic success without commitment and real work. So far, there is no internet business that has eliminated the requirement of a positive and committed work ethic. I doubt that requirement will ever change.

Whether you like it or not, undercover marketing is here to stay. Whether you know it or not, it may already be a part of your life.

Consider this. The last time a friendly tourist asked you to take their picture with an impressive new camera or an attractive woman at the bar said you could buy her a drink; they both may have been ?working?.
