For most anyone who is looking to get involved in carpentry, DIY is the logical starting point. Not everyone will have the benefit of an experienced and patient master carpenter from which you could get valuable advice, so at least for the initial steps in gaining more knowledge about carpentry DIY is the way to go.
Of course, carpentry can be quite a complicated and multi-varied field, with numerous tools, techniques, methods, and equipment to master. Things such as measuring, carpentry joints and carpentry joint types, proper tools, calibration…all of these and more would have to be taken into consideration if you are at all serious about getting better at carpentry. This is why with all of the benefits it can bring in terms of getting you started with carpentry, DIY techniques should eventually be supplemented with more thorough training and experience.
In the meantime, here are a few bits of advice that can get anyone started with carpentry, DIY style.
Magnetism in carpentry DIY
You may have never considered it before, but magnets can be quite useful for any beginner carpenter, and even more experienced ones for that matter. Think about it; you typically work with various screws, pins, nuts, and washers, all of which have an annoying tendency to slip through your fingers onto the ground below where they are virtually impossible to find. With a good magnet in your toolbox however, finding these errant bits of metal is made a lot easier.
Get it down on paper
Carpentry DIY is just as much about precision as force, and you will typically be called upon to take various measurements on a regular basis. Like most carpenters, you have probably gone with the tried and proven method of simply jotting down measurements on any stray piece of wood that is handy. The problem with this method is it is easy enough to loose track of the piece of wood where you wrote the measurements on, requiring you to measure things out all over again. With a bit of masking tape however, you always have a strip of tape to make notes and measurements on. This can be a great timesaver particularly when there is a lot of work being done.
Keep it off the tiles
If you are ever called upon to do some tiling, make sure that there is no wallpaper underneath. Placing tiles over wallpaper will result in a less than solid bond that will likely weaken after a short period. In the same way, make sure that there is no obstruction underneath when laying tiles on the floor.
Get the right tools for the job
Finally, make sure that you buy the best tools that you can afford at your price point. It is not a good idea to skimp on the quality of the tools that you will use in carpentry–DIY or otherwise–and buying the best basic carpentry tools in your bracket would ensure your safety as well as the quality of the project.
